What is hip hop music?

Hip hop music is a genre of music that was developed in the United States in the 1970s. It is typically characterized by four elements: rap, DJing, graffiti, and breakdancing. Hip hop music has become one of the most popular genres of music in the world, with a global reach that extends far beyond its origins in the United States.

The history of hip hop music

Hip hop music, also called hip-hop or rap music, is a genre of popular music developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans in the 1970s. It consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Other elements include sampling (or synthesis), and beatboxing.

Hip hop music was originally derived from disco, funk and rock music. Early hip hop was not focused on creating dance tracks for club play, but rather for home listening on cassette tapes. This trend continued with the advent of CDs in the late 1980s and early 1990s. While some turntablists use conventional record players to cue up tracks from vinyl discs instead of using CDJs or other digital sources, it is generally considered to be poor form to mix from records in a club setting, where DJs use CDJs or digital files stored on USB flash drives.
