Defining Hip Hop Dance Music

Hip hop is a style of dance that emerged from African American and Latino communities in the 1970s. It is characterized by modest beginnings, improvisation, and community involvement. Over time, it has become a global phenomenon, with different styles developing in different countries.

There are four main types of hip hop dance: breaking, locking, popping, and krumping. Breaking, also known as “b-boying” or “breakdancing”, is a style that emphasizes moves such as headspins and freezes. Locking is a style that focuses on quick movements and isolations of different body parts. Popping is a style characterized by quick, sharp movements that create the illusion of the body “popping” or “snapping”. Krumping is a style that is aggressive and energetic, with dancers often incorporating acrobatic moves into their routines.

Best Dance Music of 2016: Electronic

The best dance music of 2016 came from all different genres, but there was a clear winner: electronic dance music, or EDM. This genre had a breakout year, with new artists and new sounds. Let’s take a look at some of the best dance tracks of 2016.

Defining Electronic Dance Music

Electronic dance music (EDM), also known as dance music, club music, or simply dance, is a broad range of percussive electronic music genres made largely for nightclubs, raves and festivals. EDM is generally produced for playback by disc jockeys (DJs) who create seamless selections of tracks, called a mix by segueing from one recording to another. EDM producers also perform their music live in a concert or festival setting in what is sometimes called a live PA. In Europe, EDM is more commonly called ‘dance music’, or simply ‘dance’.

Historically, EDM developed from disco and techno. Techno then developed further styles such as trance, house and acid house. Other electronic dance music genres include big beat, breakbeat hardcore/oldschool rave, hardstyle, jungle and drum & bass.

DJing is considered a form of art. DJs use equipment that can play at least two sources of recorded music simultaneously and mix them together to create seamless transitions between recordings and develop unique mixes of songs. Often, this involves cueing up the next track on a CDJ or turntable while the current track is playing; therefore all DJs use headphones to hear the track they are cueing up. DJs must develop their quick mixing abilities to keep up with the beatmatching technique that they are using. Additionally, DJs use mixer to pre-listen to upcoming tracks in their headphones before playing them live on air. This allows them play the perfect transition between two tracks that they’ve mixed together live on air without using any recorded transition effects or editing the waveforms themselves in a audio editing program like Pro Tools after the fact which would defeat the purpose of mixing live on air in real time.”
