How Did Folk Music Start?
Contents
How did folk music start? It’s a question that’s been asked for centuries. While the answer may not be clear, there are some key elements that are essential to understanding the origins of this musical genre.
Origins of Folk Music
Folk music has its origins in the music of the people who were not professional musicians. The music was passed down orally from generation to generation. The songs were about the lives of the people and were often used as a way to teach history or stories. Folk music was an important part of the cultures of the people who created it.
America
Folk music in America is often thought of as the music of the white, rural, Anglo-Saxon Protestant majority. But from its very beginnings, American folk music has been shaped by the multiracial, multinational, urbanized society that is America.
The first American folk music was the music of the Native Americans, who lived in what is now North America for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The Native Americans had a rich musical tradition that was passed down from generation to generation. This tradition continued even after the Native Americans were forced onto reservations or into urban areas.
African Americans have also been a significant force in the development of American folk music. African American slaves were brought to America in the 1600s, and they brought their musical traditions with them. These traditions were passed down through generations of slavery and then through generations of freedom. African American folk music has been influenced by European and African musical traditions.
European immigrants also played a role in the development of American folk music. The Irish brought their traditional songs and dances to America in the 1800s, and these songs and dances soon became popular among all Americans, not just those of Irish descent. Other European immigrants—such as Germans, Poles, Italians, and Scandinavians—also brought their traditional music to America.
England
Folk music of England is traditionally based music, which has existed since the later medieval period. It is often contrasted with courtly, classical and later commercial music. Folk music has been preserved and transmitted orally, through print and later through recordings. The term is used to refer to English traditional music and music composed, or delivered, in a traditional style.
Scotland
The origins of folk music are often traced back to the medieval ballads of England and Scotland. These ballads, originally created by anonymous composers, were passed down from generation to generation and eventually became part of the musical repertoire of the British Isles. Many of these ballads were adapted into popular songs in the 18th and 19th centuries, and they remain an important part of the traditional music of England and Scotland.
The term “folk music” began to be used in the 19th century, when it was used to describe a type of popular music that was distinct from the music of the upper classes. This type of music was usually performed by working-class musicians, and it often featured simple melodies and lyrics that told stories about everyday life. Folk music was particularly popular in the United States in the early 20th century, when many American musicians began to experiment with this style.
Today, folk music is still performed all over the world, and it continues to evolve as new generations of musicians add their own creative interpretations.
Characteristics of Folk Music
Folk music is a genre of music that is typically passed down orally from one generation to the next. It is often based on a particular region or culture, and its lyrics often tell stories about the life and experiences of the people in that region. Folk music often has a simple, catchy melody that is easy to remember.
Lyrics
Lyrics in folk music often tell stories. These stories can be about real-life events or they can be fictional. The lyrics usually always have a meaning and a purpose. Many times, the lyrics are meant to teach a lesson or to make a statement about something. Folk songs can be about love, loss, courage, hope, or any other human emotion or experience.
The lyrics in folk music are sometimes spoken rather than sung. This is called chanting. Chanting is often used in folk music to keep time or to emphasize certain words or phrases.
Folk music often uses simple words and everyday language. This makes the songs easy to understand and easy to sing along to. Many folk songs have been passed down from generation to generation by people who learn them by listening and then singing them to others.
Instruments
In folk music, as in classical music, there are certain instruments that are more commonly used than others. The most common folk instruments include the following:
-guitar
-banjo
-mandolin
-fiddle
-accordion
-harmonica
-piano

Notable Folk Musicians
Folk music is a genre of music that typically uses acoustic instruments and aims to be simple and accessible to a wide audience. It started in the 18th century with songs that were passed down from generation to generation. Some notable folk musicians include Woody Guthrie, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan.
Woody Guthrie
Woodrow Wilson “Woody” Guthrie was an American singer-songwriter and musician, and one of the most significant figures in folk music. His compositions, including “This Land Is Your Land”, have inspired several generations both politically and musically. He frequently performed with the slogan “This machine kills fascists” on his guitar. Guthrie was also known for his engagement with communism and social activism.
Joan Baez
Joan Baez is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and activist whose contemporary folk music often includes songs of protest or social justice. Baez has performed publicly for over 60 years, releasing over 30 albums. Fluent in Spanish and English, she has recorded songs in at least six other languages. Although generally associated with the 1960s counterculture and anti-war movements, her earliest recordings were made in 1959.
Baez was born on Staten Island, New York, on January 9, 1941. Her mother, Joan Bridge Baez (née Maitland), referred to as Big Joan, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland from an English family that had lived there since the 17th century; she later became a teacher at a junior high school in New York. Her father, Albert Baez (1912–2007), was born in Puebla, Mexico; his family moved to Brooklyn when he was two years old. His father was not particularly religious but was a member of the Communist Party USA; Albert later became an atheist.
Both parents were musicians: Albert played the violin and later the guitar while Joan taught herself to play piano as a child and later the guitar when she was 12 years old. The Baez family converted to Quakerism during Joan’s early childhood which had a profound effect on her values and beliefs regarding social issues including civil rights and non-violence; she has credited Quaker educator Fellowship of Reconciliation founder prism Roger Wilson for inspiring many of these values during her formative years as well as those of other young people influenced by him during that time period such as civil rights leaders Bernice Reagon Johnson and Martin Luther King Jr..
Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan is one of the most influential folk musicians of all time. He changed the face of folk music forever with his innovative songwriting and unique style. Dylan is best known for his politically charged lyrics, which often captured the zeitgeist of the social and political upheaval of the 1960s. He is also celebrated for his pioneering use of folk-rock and electric folk in his later career. Dylan has released dozens of studio albums and live recordings, and he continues to perform to this day.
