What is heavy metal?

Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. The genre’s lyrical themes often deal with love, loss, temptation, megalomania, God, drugs, apocalypse, death, and other topics deemed potentially offensive by conservative groups.

The history of heavy metal

Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. The genre’s lyrics and performance styles are sometimes associated with aggression and machismo.

In 1970, four English rock bands released debut albums that branch off the Rock music mainstream and explore different yet related subgenres: Led Zeppelin with Led Zeppelin (January), Black Sabbath with Black Sabbath (February), Deep Purple with Deep Purple in Rock (June), and Uriah Heep with Very ”Eavy… Very ”Umble (July). These albums have been cited as examples of heavy metal’s distinction from other rock music. In November 1970 Groundhogs released their self titled album which mixed boogie rock/heavy blues with proto-metal riffing to create an even heavier sound which would be emulated by other bands such as Foghat who released their debut album in 1971. In March 1971 Blue Cheer released their cover of Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues”, heralding a new wave of proto-metal influenced by Psychedelic Rock.

The evolution of heavy metal

From its beginnings in the late 1960s, heavy metal has constantly evolved to stay current with the times while still retaining its core sound and attitude. This has led to a wide variety of subgenres, each with its own unique flavor and style.

Early metal bands such as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin laid the foundation for the genre with their hard-hitting riffs and dark, brooding lyrics. In the 1970s, bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden took things to the next level, adding speed and virtuosity to the mix. In the 1980s, glam metal bands like Poison and Mötley Crüe brought a more polished sound to the genre, while thrash bands like Metallica and Megadeth took things in a harder-hitting direction.

The 1990s saw metal branch out even further, with death metal bands like Death and Morbid Angel pushing the boundaries of extremity, while alternative metal bands like Tool and Rage Against the Machine blended metal with other genres such as hip hop. In the 2000s and 2010s, metalcore emerged as one of the most popular subgenres, blending elements of death metal with hardcore punk. Today, heavy metal is as varied and eclectic as ever, with new subgenres constantly emerging.

The different subgenres of heavy metal

There are many different subgenres of heavy metal, each with its own unique sound and style. Here is a brief overview of some of the most popular subgenres:

-Thrash metal: Thrash metal is characterized by its fast tempo and aggressive sound. Thrash bands often use double bass drumming and guitar solos to create a frantic, energetic sound.

-Death metal: Death metal is characterized by its dark, growling vocals and macabre lyrics. Death metal bands often use blast beats and fast guitar riffs to create a dense, chaotic sound.

-Black metal: Black metal is characterized by its atmospheric, eerie sound. Black metal bands often use tremolo picking and distorted guitars to create acold, dark atmosphere.

-Doom metal: Doom metal is characterized by its slow tempo and heavy, downtuned guitars. Doom bands often use atmospheric keyboards and dark lyrics to create a suffocating, oppressive sound.
