Mozart – Requiem

The Requiem is a musical setting of the Roman Catholic funeral mass for four soloists, double choir and orchestra by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death on 5 December the same year. A completed version dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz Orsini-Rosenberg, theRequiem’s intended dedicatee.

After Mozart’s death,Orphanine Rosenbaum commissioned Süssmayr to complete theRequiem from Mozart’s surviving sketches.Süssmayr added parts for basset horns and trombones, completed the fuguesunciaturae, and filled out vocal parts where Mozart had left only fragmentary melodies with basslines. While much of the music can be attributed with reasonable certainty to Mozart himself, uncertainly continues as to which sections were actually composed by him and which sections were later added or completed by Süssmayr.

TheRequiem is scored for 2 basset horns in C (originally 2 bassoons), 2 trumpetsin C (or cornets), 3 trombones(alto, tenor & bass), timpani, violinsI & II, viola, and basso continuo(cello & bass). It is occasionally performed without a choir but almost always with four soloists and an orchestra.
