Janiec Opera Company

The Janiec Opera Company will be performing at the Brevard Music Center on July 13th-15th. The Janiec Opera Company is one of the nation’s premier summer opera training programs for young singers.

Company history

The Janiec Opera Company is the professional opera company in residence at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina. Under the artistic leadership of Artistic Director, David Effron, the Janiec Opera Company has presented nine mainstage productions, four fully-staged operas, and three world premiere operas since 2010.

The Janiec Opera Company was founded in 2010 by Artistic Director David Effron and Executive Director Richard Boggs. The company is named for Tomek and Sheila Janiec, longtime supporters of the Brevard Music Center. The mission of the Janiec Opera Company is to provide young professional opera singers with opportunities to perform full-scale operatic roles in a nurturing and creative environment.

The Janiec Opera Company has been praised for its innovative programming and for its commitment to new works. In 2012, the company produced the world premiere of Michael Ching’s Speed Dating Tonight!, and in 2014, presented the world premiere of Daron Hagen’s Amelia, which were both commissioned by the Brevard Music Center. The Janiec Opera Company has also been recognized for its commitment to presenting standard repertoire operas with fresh perspectives. In 2013, the company produced a critically acclaimed new production of Verdi’s La traviata set in Los Angeles in 1959, and in 2015 presented a co-production with Boston Lyric Opera of Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus set in Boston during prohibition.

The Janiec Opera Company performs at the Brevard Music Center’s Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium, which has a capacity of 1,400 seats.

The mission of the Janiec Opera Company is to provide training and performance opportunities for exceptional young opera singers and to bring operatic repertoire of the highest quality to the community.

The Janiec Opera Company was founded in 2008 by Dr. James Michael Peterson and is currently in residence at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, North Carolina. The company has been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” and their performances have been hailed as “superb” by The Guardian (UK).

Brevard Music Center

Janiec Opera Company is proud to be performing at the Brevard Music Center this summer. The company will be performing three operas over the course of two weeks. The first opera, “Don Giovanni,” will be performed on July 21st and 22nd. The second opera, “The Marriage of Figaro,” will be performed on July 28th and 29th. The third and final opera of the season, “Carmen,” will be performed on August 4th and 5th.

Center history

The Brevard Music Center is a music academy and summer festival located in the town of Brevard, North Carolina. Founded in 1936 by renowned French bass-baritone Pierre Gaveau and American violinist Rudolf Serkin, the center has been a mecca for aspiring classical musicians from around the world. Each year, over 800 young artists come to Brevard to take part in the center’s rigorous training program. In addition to private lessons and master classes, students participate in public performances and enjoy mentorship from some of the world’s leading classical musicians.

The Brevard Music Center is an American summer music institute and festival located in the town of Brevard, North Carolina. The center presents more than 80 orchestral, operatic, and chamber concerts and recitals from June through August each year. It is the home of the Brevard Music Center Orchestra and the Brevard Festival Singers. The Janiec Opera Company of the Brevard Music Center is one of two professional opera companies in North Carolina.

The Janiec Opera Company performed at the Brevard Music Center on July 28. The company, based out of Appalachian State University, consists of young professional singers who have completed their undergraduate or graduate degrees in vocal performance.
