Miles Davis
Miles Davis was an American trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music. Davis adopted a variety of musical styles throughout his career. He is credited as the innovator of cool jazz, post-bop, modal jazz, and jazz-rock fusion.
Born andraised in Illinois, Davis left his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City after only one year to pursue a career in music. He joined Chico Hamilton’s band as a member of the horn section in 1955 and made his first recordings with the group that year. In 1956, he recorded his debut album as a leader, Round About Midnight, which was released by Columbia Records to critical acclaim.
Davis signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1972 and recorded several highly acclaimed albums with them, including On the Corner (1972) and Bitches Brew (1970), which helped spearhead the jazz-fusion movement. In 1986, he returned to Columbia Records and retired from performing two years later. In 1991, he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Davis’ final studio album Doo-Bop (1992) was released posthumously; he died on September 28th of that same year from complications from pneumonia at the age of 65.
John Coltrane
John Coltrane was an American jazz saxophonist and composer who was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. He first came to prominence in the 1940s as a member of the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet and big band. He later made a name for himself as a solo artist with his unique style of improvisation and his groundbreaking work in the area of modal jazz.
Coltrane’s career spanned three decades and he helped to shape the course of jazz music with his innovative and experimental work. He was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998, and received a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2007.
Billie Holiday
One of the most influential jazz singers of all time, Billie Holiday had a voice that was both unique and powerful. She was able to convey a wide range of emotions through her singing, and her interpretation of songs was unlike any other. Her vocal style was characterized by its elegance and simplicity, and she often added her own personal touch to the lyrics of songs. Marvin Gaye
Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. (April 2, 1939 – April 1, 1984), better known by his stage name Marvin Gaye, was an American singer, songwriter and record producer. Gaye helped to shape the sound of Motown in the 1960s, first as an in-house session player and later as a solo artist with a string of hits, including “Ain’t That Peculiar”, “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”. He recorded songs in a wide variety of genres for Motown throughout the 1960s as well as duets with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Diana Ross and Tammi Terrell, later earning the titles “Prince of Motown” and “Prince of Soul”.
As Gaye’s career progressed, he began to deal with personal problems that affected his music. His biggest hit song, “Sexual Healing”, was recorded during one of these periods and reflected his turmoil; it sold over three million copies and made him one of the most successful black recording artists of the 1980s. Despite its commercial success, Gaye’s personal life continued to deteriorate; he was estranged from both his first wife Janis and second wife Irene Kelly for several years before their respective deaths in 1979 and 1987.
