Latin music is having a moment. It’s everywhere, from the radio to TV to film. And now, it has its very own month.
Latin Music Month is a celebration of the Latinx community and its contributions to music. The monthlong event was created by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (LARAS) and launched in 2014.
During Latin Music Month, LARAS will present special events and educational workshops celebrating Latin music and its history. The month will culminate with the Latin Grammy Awards, which will be broadcast live on November 20th.
So why does Latin music deserve its own month?
For starters, it’s one of the most popular genres in the world. According to a Nielsen report, Latin music accounts for 5.8% of all music consumption in the United States. That may not sound like much, but it’s a significant number when you consider that Spanish-speaking people make up just 17% of the population.
What’s more, Latin music is having a moment in pop culture. It’s being embraced by mainstream artists like Justin Bieber, who collaborated with Luis Fonsi on the smash hit “Despacito”; and Taylor Swift, who featured Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee on her song “Look What You Made Me Do”. Meanwhile, shows like Fox’s “Empire” and ABC’s “Modern Family” are helping to increase exposure for Latinx performers.
With all this momentum, it’s no wonder that LARAS decided to create Latin Music Month. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the genre and its many talented performers while also educating people about its rich history.
