About the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Latin America South Act
The MTV Europe Music Award for Best Latin America South Act was first awarded at the 2002 Europe Music Awards. The award was created to recognize the best Latin American artist from South America. The award is given to the artist who has had the most success in Europe and the world.
History of the award
The MTV Europe Music Award for Best Latin America South Act is an award presented at the MTV Europe Music Awards. It was first awarded at the 2008 edition of the Awards, to Argentine band Erreway.
The award was created as a result of the success of the Latin American music market in recent years. The award is given to artists from countries in Latin America, which are part of the South region according to the United Nations geoscheme for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Criteria for eligibility
To be eligible for the award, the Latin American act must have released new material within the eligibility period. The eligibility period for the 2020 awards is June 1, 2019, to May 31, 2020.
past winners
The MTV Europe Music Award for Best Latin America South Act was first presented at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards. The award was given to recognize the best Latin American South recording artist of the year. It is one of the four regional awards that are presented at the Europe Music Awards, along with Best Latin America North Act, Best Latin America Central Act and Best Latin America South Act.
2016: Maluma
Maluma is a Colombian singer, songwriter and record producer, signed to Sony Music Colombia. Maluma began his musical career composing songs and working as a backup vocalist for various artists. In 2010, he released his first studio album, Magia. The album peaked at number 42 on Billboard’s Latin Albums chart in the United States and at number two on the Colombian Albums Chart. The single “ObsesiĆ³n” reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart in the United States.
2017: Shakira
Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll is a Colombian singer, songwriter and dancer. Born and raised in Barranquilla, she began performing in school, demonstrating Latin American and Arabic influences with her blend of Latin pop, rock and Arab music. Shakira entered the English-language market with her fifth album, Laundry Service. Its lead single, “Whenever, Wherever”, became the best-selling single of 2002.
2018: J Balvin
The MTV Europe Music Awards Best Latin America South Act was first awarded at the 2018 ceremony. The award is given to artists from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.
The inaugural award was won by Colombian singer J Balvin.

Bad Bunny
Bad Bunny is a Puerto Rican singer, rapper, and producer. His music is often characterized by its liberal use of Spanish in his lyrics, as well as hip hop, reggaeton, trap, and Latin pop. He has been nominated for five Grammy Awards, winning two. His song “Mia”, featuring Drake, peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making him the first Latin male artist to do so in the chart’s history.
J Balvin
J Balvin is a Colombian reggaeton singer. His music is often characterized as Latin trap and has won him several awards, including three Latin Grammy Awards, five Billboard Latin Music Awards, four MTV Europe Music Awards, one MTV Video Music Award and one Lo Nuestro Award. He is also a recipient of the Latino Songwriters Hall of Fame’s Vanguard award.
Ozuna
Ozuna is a reggaeton and Latin trap singer from Puerto Rico. His full name is Juan Carlos Ozuna Rosado. He was born on March 13, 1992, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Ozuna is one of the most popular Latin trap and reggaeton artists. He has won several awards, including the Billboard Latin Music Award for New Artist of the Year and the Billboard Latin Music Award for Artist of the Year.
