Best Indie Folk Album
There was no shortage of great music in 2018, particularly in the indie folk genre. Below are some of the year’s best indie folk albums, as well as our thoughts on what made them stand out.
Bon Iver – “Blood Bank”
Justin Vernon’s project Bon Iver released this EP in early 2009 to critical acclaim. Comprised of just four tracks, “Blood Bank” is a beautifully understated record that highlights Vernon’s superb songwriting and vocal abilities. Each track is perfectly executed, and the overall atmosphere of the EP is one of introspection and contemplation. “Blood Bank” is an essential listen for fans of indie folk, and it’s easily one of the best releases of the year.
Fleet Foxes – “Sun Giant”
Fleet Foxes’ second EP, “Sun Giant,” was released in early 2008 to much fanfare. The band had already established themselves as one of the most promising new acts in indie rock with their debut self-titled album, and “Sun Giant” only further cemented their status. The EP features four tracks that showcase the band’s exceptional vocal harmonies, as well as their mastery of sonic texture and dynamics. “Sun Giant” is a stunning release from start to finish, and it’s clear that Fleet Foxes are only getting better with each release.
The tallest man on Earth – “Shallow Graves”
Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man on Earth, released his third album “Shallow Graves” in early 2016 to widespread acclaim. The album is a departure from Matsson’s previous work in that it features a full band backing him up instead of his usual acoustic guitar/vocal setup. This change gives the album a more robust sound without sacrificing any of the intimacy or starkness that made Matsson’s earlier work so special. “Shallow Graves” is an excellent album from start to finish, and it cemented Matsson’s place as one of the most talented singer-songwriters working today.
