The Band’s History

The Band was a Canadian-American rock group, formed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1967 by Rick Danko (bass guitar, double bass, fiddle, vocals), Garth Hudson (keyboards, saxophones, trumpet), Richard Manuel (keyboards, drums, vocals), Robbie Robertson (guitar, vocals), and Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, vocals). The Band’s music fused elements of rockabilly, folk music, country music, jazz and blues.

The original lineup released two albums before Manuel committed suicide in 1986. The surviving members reformed the Band without him and released a third album in 1987;helm subsequently left due to creative differences. After the release of the live album Jubilation in 1998 and Helm’s death in 2012 from throat cancer at the age of 71,[1]the surviving members decided not to continue as a band.

In 2014 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Robbie Robertson.[2]
