Pre-2000s
Netflix’s selection of pop music spans several decades, including a healthy selection of music from the pre-2000s. The Beatles
The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. With members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, they became widely regarded as the foremost and most influential music band in history. Rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles later utilised several genres, ranging from pop ballads to psychedelic rock, often incorporating classical elements in innovative ways during the recording process. In 1963, their enormous popularity first emerged as “Beatlemania”; as the group’s music grew in sophistication following their initial success, led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the band were integral to pop music’s evolution into an art form and to the development of the counterculture of the 1960s.
Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. He and his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1948, where he began his singing career with Sun Records in 1954. His first hit song, “That’s All Right,” was released in July 1954. In 1955, he signed a contract with RCA Victor and became famous with a string of hit songs including “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog,” and “Don’t Be Cruel.”
In 1956, he appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, which caused a sensation. He became even more popular with movies such as Love Me Tender (1956) and Jailhouse Rock (1957). In 1958, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served for two years in Germany. He returned to the United States in 1960 and resumed his singing career.
In the 1960s, Elvis continued to make successful movies such as G.I. Blues (1960), Blue Hawaii (1961), Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962), and Viva Las Vegas (1964). His musical style changed in the mid-1960s as he began to experiment with rockabilly, country, and gospel music. His 1968 comeback television special featured many of these new genres and was a huge success.
Elvis’ personal life was tumultuous in the 1970s. He divorced his wife Priscilla in 1973 and married 14-year-old Lisa Marie Presley the following year. He gained significant weight and became addicted to prescription drugs, leading to rumors of poor health. Despite these problems, he continued to record music and give live performances throughout the decade.
He died suddenly on August 16, 1977 at his Graceland home in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 42.
Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson is often credited as the King of Pop. He first rose to prominence as a member of the Jackson 5 in the 1970s, and went on to have a successful solo career in the 1980s and 1990s. His 1982 album, Thriller, is the best-selling album of all time. Jackson also won numerous awards throughout his career, including eight Grammy Awards. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
In 2003, Jackson was accused of sexually abusing a child, but was acquitted of all charges in 2005. In 2009, he died of a drug overdose at the age of 50.
2000s
In the early 2000s, Netflix didn’t carry much pop music. You could find some older titles, but the selection was very limited. The site began to expand its selection in the mid-2000s, and by the late 2000s, it had a fairly extensive collection of pop music. In the early 2010s, Netflix began to add more exclusive content, and today, the site carries a wide variety of pop music.
Britney Spears
Britney Spears (born December 2, 1981) is an American singer, songwriter, dancer and actress. Born in McComb, Mississippi and raised in Kentwood, Louisiana, she began performing as a child, landing acting roles in stage productions and television shows. She signed with Jive Records in 1997 and released her debut album …Baby One More Time in 1999 which debuted atop the Billboard 200 and became the best-selling album by a teenage solo artist. selling over 31 million copies worldwide. The album was followed by a series of successful albums including Oops!… I Did It Again (2000), Britney (2001) and In the Zone (2003), all of which have sold multi-platinum worldwide. Throughout her career, Spears has sold over 150 million records worldwide making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
Justin Timberlake
Justin Timberlake rose to fame in the early 2000s as a member of the boy band *NSYNC. He released his debut solo album, “Justified,” in 2002. The album featured the hit singles “Like I Love You” and “Cry Me a River.” Timberlake’s second album, “FutureSex/LoveSounds,” was released in 2006. It included the hits “SexyBack,” “My Love,” and “What Goes Around… Comes Around.”
Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera rose to prominence as a teen starlet on the Disney Channel’s Mickey Mouse Club in the early 1990s. A few years later, she became a global pop sensation with her self-titled debut album, which spawned hits like “Genie in a Bottle” and “What a Girl Wants.” Throughout her career, Aguilera has pushed the boundaries of pop music with experimental albums like Stripped and Back to Basics. She has also earned acclaim for her work as a judge on NBC’s The Voice.
2010s
In the 2010s, we saw a huge increase in the popularity of streaming services like Netflix. This allowed for a new way of consuming music, and pop music was no exception. We saw a number of popular artists releasing exclusive albums and singles on Netflix, which helped to boost the popularity of the service.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga ruled the 2010s with her catchy pop hooks and outrageous fashion. Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in 1986, Gaga got her start performing in New York City clubs in the early 2000s. She released her debut album, The Fame, in 2008, and it quickly shot to the top of the charts thanks to hits like “Just Dance” and “Poker Face.” Her follow-up album, Born This Way, was an even bigger success, cementing Gaga’s status as a global pop phenomenon.
In addition to her music career, Gaga also carved out a place for herself as a style icon and fashion trendsetter. She frequently stunned fans and critics alike with her unique and often controversial fashion choices, which ranged from dresses made entirely of meat to hats adorned with live butterflies.
Later in the 2010s, Gaga shifted gears and found success with more serious projects. She starred in the hit movie A Star Is Born (2018) and won an Oscar for her song “Shallow.” She also released an acclaimed album called Joanne (2016), which showed off her more vulnerable side.
Katy Perry
Katy Perry (born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25, 1984) is an American singer and songwriter. After singing in church during her childhood, she pursued a career in gospel music as a teenager. Perry signed with Red Hill Records and released her debut studio album Katy Hudson under her birth name in 2001, which was commercially unsuccessful. She moved to Los Angeles the following year to venture into secular music after Red Hill ceased operations and she subsequently began working with producers Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin. Perry rose to fame in 2008 with the release of her second album, One of the Boys, a pop record featuring the singles “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot n Cold”.
Her third album, Teenage Dream (2010), topped the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and included the singles “Firework”, “California Gurls”, “Teenage Dream”, “E.T.”, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, and “The One That Got Away”. The album became the first by a female artist to produce five number-one songs in the U.S., and earned Perry numerous awards and accolades, including a Grammy Award, three American Music Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, four Guinness World Records, two Brit Awards among others.She followed this success by releasing Prism (2013), which yielded chart-topping singles “Roar” and “Dark Horse”. Her fifth studio album Smile was released in 2020.
Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and dancer. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Mars moved to Los Angeles in 2004 to pursue a musical career. After being dropped by Motown Records, Mars signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records in 2009. In the same year, he co-founded the production team The Smeezingtons, responsible for various successful singles for Mars himself and other artists.
Mars rose to prominence in 2010 with the release of his debut studio album Doo-Wops & Hooligans, which peaked at number three on the US Billboard 200 chart and sold over one million copies worldwide. The album’s lead single “Just the Way You Are” peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. His second album Unorthodox Jukebox (2012) peaked at number one in several countries worldwide and produced the singles “Locked Out of Heaven”, “Treasure” and “When I Was Your Man”. In 2014, Mars collaborated with Mark Ronson on “Uptown Funk”, which topped many music charts worldwide including the US Billboard Hot 100 for 14 non-consecutive weeks.
During his career to date, Mars has sold over 130 million records worldwide making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has won numerous awards including 11 Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards, three Guinness World Records and was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2011. In 2016 he ranked 5th place on their Most Streamed Artist since 2010 list as well as their Most Searched Artist in 2016
