Newsted’s musical career
Newsted is a heavy metal music legend, best known for his work as the bassist for Metallica. He was also a member of Voivod and Flotsam and Jetsam. Newsted has released four solo albums, the most recent being Heavy Metal Music (2013).
Metallica
When it comes to heavy metal, there are few bands that have had as much of an impact as Metallica. With their mix of hard-hitting riffs, lightning-fast solos, and pounding rhythms, they redefined what metal could be and inspired a whole new generation of musicians.
Jason Newsted was an integral part of that sound, playing bass on some of the band’s most iconic albums, including ‘Master of Puppets’ and ‘…And Justice for All.’ But in 2001, he left Metallica to pursue other musical interests, and the band has been without a bass player ever since.
Now, after years away from the limelight, Newsted is back with a new band called Newsted. And he’s ready to show the world that he’s still got what it takes to rock.
Voivod
Newsted was the bassist of Voivod from 1987 to 1994. He recorded four studio albums with the band and toured extensively, including Voivod’s first world tour in 1989. He left Voivod in 1994 to join Metallica as their bassist, following the death of Metallica’s former bassist Cliff Burton. With Metallica, Newsted wrote and recorded the albums Load (1996), Reload (1997), and Garage Inc. (1998). He appears on the live album S&M (1999). Newsted was fired from Metallica on January 17, 2001, due to “private and personal issues.”
Ozzy Osbourne
In 1992, Newsted was recruited by Ozzy Osbourne to play bass on the album No More Tears. He played on all of the album’s tracks, with the exception of “Mr. Tinkertrain”, which features Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath on bass. Newsted also toured with Osbourne from September 1992 to December 1992, appearing on the live album Live & Loud.
Echobrain
Echobrain was a heavy metal band formed in 2000 by ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted. The band also featured guitarists Dana Strum and Charlie Baucer, and drummer Scott squash Chapman. The band released one self-titled album in 2002 before disbanding in 2004.
Newsted had originally intended Echobrain to be a three-piece, but he expanded the lineup to include Strum and Baucer after meeting them at a clinic. The trio began writing and demoing material, and they were soon signed to Newsted’s Chophouse Records label.
Echobrain’s self-titled debut album was released in 2002 to positive reviews from the metal press. The album showcased the band’s diverse influences, ranging from classic rock to progressive metal.
Despite the strong reception for their debut, Echobrain was unable to achieve any commercial success and they disbanded shortly after the release of the album. Newsted resurrected the band in 2011 with a new lineup, but they once again failed to gain any traction and split up for good in 2013.
