Reggae Music History

The word reggae is said to mean “ragged” or “streaked,” possibly referring to the appearance of the music’s guitar chords. Reggae developed in Jamaica in the 1960s, and is strongly influenced by traditional mento and calypso music, as well as American jazz and rhythm and blues. The style is characterized by a strong bass line, drum and percussion patterns, offbeat guitar strums called skanks, and accents on the third beat of each measure (often played on electric guitar).

Reggae became popular in the 1970s with artists such as Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, and Peter Tosh. Marley’s music specifically helped spread reggae outside of Jamaica, first to Europe and Africa, and then to North America. In the 1980s and 1990s, reggae artists such as Ziggy Marley (Bob Marley’s son), Shabba Ranks, Sean Paul, Beenie Man, Buju Banton, Missy Elliott, and General Levy continued to gain popularity both in Jamaica and internationally.

In recent years, a new wave of reggae artists has emerged, including Protoje, Chronixx, Jah9, J Boog, Kabaka Pyramid, Rebelution, SOJA ( Soldiers Of Jah Army), Stick Figure , Iration ,collie Buddz And many more . These artists are often referred to as part of the “Reggae Revival.”

Reggae Music Culture

Reggae music originated in the small island nation of Jamaica in the late 1960s. The unique sound of reggae music was a result of the combination of African and Caribbean influences. The popularity of reggae music spread quickly throughout the world, and by the 1970s, it could be heard in many parts of the globe.

Reggae music is often characterized by its slow, relaxed tempo and its focus on themes of peace, love, and unity. The lyrics of reggae songs often deal with social issues such as poverty, injustice, and racial inequality. Reggae music has been used as a tool for political protest and social change. It has also been credited with helping to spread awareness of Jamaican culture and promoting cross-cultural understanding.

The best-known exponent of reggae music is Bob Marley, who became an international superstar in the 1970s with his band, The Wailers. Marley’s soulful voice and positive message helped make reggae music popular with people from all walks of life. Today, reggae music continues to be popular around the world, and its influence can be heard in many other genres of music.
