What is Gospel Music?

Gospel music is a genre of Christian music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace. Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics. Gospel music can be traced to the early 17th century, with roots in the black oral tradition. Hymns and sacred songs were often repeated in a call and response fashion. Most of the churches relied on hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment. Speaking generally, gospel music is a product of the Protestant Reformation. It arose out of the works of reformers who were shaking up our perceptions about what was possible in church music. priests were singing complex works for choirs accompanied by masterful musicians on pipe organs much to the chagrin of reformers who felt that such excesses had no place in worship services!

The Gospel Music Workshop of America

The Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) is an international music convention founded in Detroit, Michigan by the Rev. James Cleveland in 1968. The GMWA is a membership organization of choirs, groups, and individual artists who attend annual regional and national conventions. The annual national convention is typically held in the month of July in various U.S. cities; the 54th annual national convention was held in Nashville, Tennessee from July 17-22, 2017.

WEEK ONE

Monday – Introduction to the Shape-Note Tradition
In this opening session, we will explore the history and origins of shape-note singing, a American musical tradition that has its roots in the eighteenth century. We will learn about the four shapes that are used to note the tones in a scale, and we will sing some traditional shape-note tunes.

Tuesday – An introduction to gospel music
Gospel music is a genre of American music with its roots in the Christian music of the late 19th century. In this session, we will listen to and discuss some important examples of gospel music, from its early beginnings to the present day.

Wednesday – Gospel Music Workshop
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn about the elements of gospel style and how to create their own gospel arrangements. We will also rehearse and perform a gospel song together.

Thursday – Free day
Friday – Gospel Music Jam Session
In this informal session, musicians of all levels are invited to come together and play gospel tunes in a supportive and fun environment.

Saturday – Gospel Singing Competition
This is a chance for participants to show off their newly acquired skills in a friendly competition. There will be prizes for first, second, and third place.

The Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) is an international music publishing company founded in 1965 by James Cleveland.
