What We Do
The Old Town School of Folk Music is more than just a place to learn folk music. We’re a community of musicians, artists, and teachers committed to making music accessible and joyful for everyone.
We believe that everyone is musical, and that the ability to make music is a fundamental human birthright. We’ve been living this belief since our founding in 1957, when we began teaching folk music in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood.
Over the past 60 years, we’ve become one of the largest and most respected nonprofit music schools in the world. We now offer more than 700 weekly classes at our two campuses in Chicago, as well as online courses and a touring program that brings musical performances and workshops to communities around the country. Our faculty consists of some of the most accomplished musicians in the city, many of whom are also active recording artists and bandleaders. Our students range in age from toddlers to seniors, and come from diverse backgrounds and musical interests.
We offer classes in a wide variety of musical styles, including traditional folk, blues, bluegrass, Celtic, old-timey, rockabilly, country swing, jazz, world music, songwriting, and more. In addition to our regular classes, we offer opportunities for students to perform onstage with their peers in our Student Ensembles program; take part in special events like our Folk Festivals; or participate in our outreach programs that bring music instruction to underserved communities.
