The Characters
One of the best things about The Phantom of the Opera is the story and the characters. The characters in the story are so rich and complex. They are all unique and have their own motivations. The Phantom of the Opera is a story about love, obsession, and betrayal. The characters are what make the story so special.
The Phantom
The Phantom is the title character from Gaston Leroux’s novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra (1910), best known to English speakers as The Phantom of the Opera. He is also a main character of many derived works, including some film adaptations.
Leroux’s novel reveals that the Phantom’s real name is Erik Destler and he was born in Greece in 1810. He was a very talented child and his mother kept him hidden away from the world because she was afraid that people would laugh at him because of his deformed skull. When Erik was twelve years old, his mother died and he ran away from home.
Erik ended up in Paris, France where he studied architecture and music. He became a very talented musician and an expert at building things. Erik also became a master of disguise and an excellent ventriloquist. He used these skills to create the persona of the “Phantom of the Opera”.
The Phantom lived in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House where he built himself a secret lair. He became obsessed with the beautiful opera singer Christine Daaé and decided to make her a star. The Phantom taught Christine how to sing and helped her get leading roles in operas.
The other characters in the story found out about the Phantom’s existence and were scared of him. However, Christine was not scared of the Phantom and she eventually fell in love with him. The Phantom loved Christine too, but he knew that he could never have a normal life with her because of his deformity.
The story ends with the Phantom sacrificing himself for Christine’s happiness.
