The year is 1881, and the Paris Opera House is in the midst of construction. The workers are uncovering a strange and mysterious object deep in the foundations of the building, an object which seems to have a life of its own.
One of the workers, called Simon, is killed by the object when he tries to touch it. The other workers are superstitious and scared, and decide to leave the object alone. But one of them, called Erik, is curious and decides to investigate further.
Erik discovers that the object is a mask, and that it has a strange power over him. He decides to keep it and take it home with him.
The mask seems to have a will of its own, and starts to take over Erik’s life. It compels him to do things that he wouldn’t normally do, including kill people. Erik starts to believe that the mask is possessed by a demon.
Erik’s obsession with the mask leads him to kidnap Christine Daaé, a young singer at the Opera House who he believes is the reincarnation of his long-dead love. Christine is terrified of Erik but she also can’t help but be drawn in by his strange power.
The Phantom lures Christine into his underground lair beneath the Opera House and reveals his true identity to her – he is horribly disfigured and wears a mask to cover his face. He begs her to love him, but she refuses.
