Music History in Midland
Since the early 1950s, Midland, Michigan has been a hub for live music and rock and roll. The first radio station in Midland, WMPX, began playing rock and roll in the mid-1950s and the first live band played at the Dixie Motor Speedway in 1957. In the 1960s, a number of clubs and venues opened up that featured local, regional, and national acts. These included the Starlite Ballroom, the Midland Civic Arena, and Club Bob-Lo.
The 1970s saw the rise of a number of Midland-based bands that would go on to achieve national success, including Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Ted Nugent, and Grand Funk Railroad. This decade also saw the opening of Dow Event Center (formerly known as Midland Center), which has since become one of the premier concert venues in Michigan.
The 1980s brought more national success for Midland-based bands, with Kid Rock and Uncle Kracker achieving mainstream success. In recent years, a number of local music festivals have been created to showcase the talent of both local and regional musicians, including Rockin’ on the Tittabawassee, Riverdays, and Memorial Day Concerts inthe Park.
