Shakira’s Beginnings

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia. Her father, William Mebarak Chadid, was a Lebanese immigrant who came to Colombia at the age of 18. Shakira’s mother, Nidia Ripoll Torrado, is a Colombian of Italian and Spanish ancestry. Shakira has eight older half-siblings from her father’s previous marriage.

Her musical beginnings

Shakira began her musical career at the age of 12 and released her first album, Magia, in 1991. She followed that with Peligro in 1993, after which she took a break from recording to graduate from high school. Shakira returned to the studio in 1995 to begin work on her third album, Pies Descalzos. The album was released in 1996 and helped Shakira gain international recognition; it spawned the hit singles ” Estoy Aqui” and “Un Poco de Amor.”

Her first album

When Shakira was just 14 years old, she released her first album, “Magia.” The album did not gain much traction in the music industry. In fact, it was largely unnoticed by the public. However, “Magia” did well enough to convince Shakira’s record label, Sony Music, to give her another chance.

Shakira’s second album, “Peligro,” was released in 1993. “Peligro” (“Danger”) was a bit more successful than “Magia.” It included the singles “Baila Baila Baila” and “Que Vuelvas.” Despite the success of “Peligro,” Shakira was still relatively unknown outside of her native Colombia.

It was a commercial success, selling over 13 million copies worldwide. It also earned Shakira a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album.

In 2005, Shakira released her sixth studio album, “Oral Fixation Vol. 2.” The album featured the hit single “La Tortura,” which topped the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart for a record-breaking 25 weeks. It was also a commercial success, selling over 5 million copies worldwide.
