Surf Music
Surf music is a genre of popular music associated with surf culture, particularly as found in Southern California. It was especially popular from 1962 to 1964 in two major forms. The first was instrumental surf, characterized by reverb-drenched electric guitars played to evoke the sound of crashing waves, largely pioneered by Dick Dale and the Del-Tones. The second was vocal surf, which took the original sound and added standup surfing commentary (chanted or spoken) and emphasis on youthful nihilism. Dick Dale developed the sound from early African-American rhythm and blues influences such as that of guitarist Django Reinhardt, as well as his own Lebanese heritage—his father played oud, a stringed instrument similar to a mandolin or bouzouki. Reverb-drenched electric guitar lines set to a backbeat have been replaced by drum machines and synthesizers.
