From a very young age music played an important role in Marvin’s life; his father being a Pentecostal minister meant that Family gatherings often involved singing and performing gospel music together. In his autobiography **”DIVINER OF SOUL: THE LIFE & LEGACY OF MARVIN GAYE”** author Steve Turner writes that “As a result of their shared love of music it became one of the few things that could bring some measure of communication between father and son.”
It was during his high school years that Marvin began to develop his musical talent; he learned to play the piano by ear and started to write songs. After high school Marvin briefly attended Howard University on a football scholarship but dropped out after only one semester choosing instead to pursue a career as a professional musician
