History of the Music Hall in Kansas City
The Music Hall in Kansas City was built in 1878 and was designed by the architect, John McShain. The Music Hall was originally built as a vaudeville theatre and it was also used as a movie theatre. The Music Hall was closed in the early 1970s, but it was reopened in 1977 as a performing arts centre.

It became known as the “Madame Butterfly House” because of the number of productions of that opera that were staged there. It was also home to the Kansas City Symphony from 1932-1984.
In 1979, the theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 1980, it underwent a $2.5 million renovation which restored many of its original features. The theater continues to be used for a variety of events today and is one of Kansas City’s most beloved landmarks.
