“Boys Don’t Cry” by The Cure

The Cure are an English rock band from Crawley, West Sussex, formed in 1978. They have experienced numerous line-up changes throughout their career, with Robert Smith being the only constant member.

The Cure’s early style was influenced by punk rock and new wave. Their debut album Three Imaginary Boys (1979) was released to mixed reviews. Later in 1979, they released the more pop-oriented Seventeen Seconds which incorporated synthesizers for the first time in their sound. The album was a commercial success and peaked at number 12 in the UK Albums Chart. Following the release of Seventeen Seconds, keyboardist Matthieu Hartley left the band; he would later be replaced by keyboard player Alan Wilder. The next album Faith (1981) marked a change in direction for The Cure towards an atmospheric gothic rock sound with often dark lyrics that explored themes of love and despair. It reached number three in the UK Albums Chart and was certified Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).
