Music News
Rock music is a genre of popular music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia in the 1950s. The genre has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, a style which drew heavily on the genres of blues, rhythm and blues, and from country music. Rock music also drew influence from jazz, folk music, and classical music.
The term “rock” was first used to describe a specific type of music in the 1950s, but it came into general use as a shorthand for “rock and roll” by the 1960s. In the 1980s, punk rock re-energized the genre and helped to Spawn new subgenres including New Wave, post-punk, gothic rock, and indie rock. By the 1990s, grunge had ended the dominance of hair metal bands like Bon Jovi and Warrant, while also bringing about mainstream success for alternative acts such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam. In the 2000s, guitar-driven hard rock made a comeback with bands such as Creed and Nickelback.

Cover Songs
Many rock bands release cover songs as singles, EPs, or album tracks. A cover song is a new performance or recording of a previously recorded song. Typically, a cover version of a song is done by a different artist than the original performer or composer of the track.
While some covers are exact replicas of the original recording, others offer a new interpretation of the song, often with a different arrangement, instrumentation, or style. In some cases, a band will completely reimagine a classic track, giving it an entirely new sound and feel. Some covers become more popular than the original recording, and can even eclipse it in popularity.
The Beatles’ 1968 release “Helter Skelter” was originally written and recorded by The Who. The Beatles’ version popularized the song and helped to propel it to classic status. Similarly, Jimi Hendrix’s 1967 rendition of “All Along the Watchtower” became more popular than Bob Dylan’s original 1964 recording. Dylan himself has said that Hendrix’s version is “definitive” and “my favorite cover of [the] song.”
Aretha Franklin’s 1968 cover of Otis Redding’s “Respect” is another classic example of a cover eclipsing the popularity of the original recording. Franklin put her own stamp on the song, infusing it with elements of gospel and soul that helped to make it an anthem for the Civil Rights movement. The song became one of Franklin’s signature tunes and won her two Grammy Awards.
