So, without further ado, let’s get started with our list of the top hip hop music radio stations.

Hip Hop History

Hip hop music first gained mainstream popularity in the early 1980s. DJs such as Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, and Kool Herc would play records at block parties and clubs in New York City. These parties became known as “rap battles”, where MCs would battle each other using rhymes.

Origins

Hip hop music first emerged on the streets of New York City in the 1970s. African American and Latino youth were the pioneers of this new sound, which blended elements of funk, soul, R&B, and disco. These early rappers would often rhyme over pre-recorded tracks, or “beats.” Break dancing also emerged as a popular element of hip hop culture during this era. Hip hop quickly spread to other urban areas throughout the United States, and eventually to countries around the world.

Rise to Popularity

In the late 1970s, hip hop music began to rise in popularity. This was in part due to the success of the Sugarhill Gang’s song “Rapper’s Delight”, which was the first rap song to become a top 40 hit. In the early 1980s, other hip hop artists such as Run-DMC and Public Enemy also became popular. By the mid-1980s, hip hop music was becoming more mainstream, and it continued to grow in popularity throughout the 1990s. Today, hip hop is one of the most popular genres of music in the world.
