During the Harlem Renaissance, black artists and musicians brought their talents to the forefront of American culture and made a significant impact on the world of music. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black Music Month, and it has been celebrated annually ever since.

The History of Black Music Month
Black Music Month is celebrated every June to honor the legacy and contributions of black musicians, past and present. The history of Black Music Month can be traced back to the early 1970s, when inspired by the Civil Rights movement and the success of Negro History Week, Howard Swanson (a music professor at Fisk University) and his students petitioned for a month-long celebration of black music. In 1976, Swanson’s dream became a reality when President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black Music Month.
Since then, Black Music Month has been celebrated annually with events and programming dedicated to highlighting the best in black music. This year, VH1 Soul is celebrating Black Music Month with special programming throughout the month of June, including our “Soul Unsung” documentary series, which tells the stories of some of the most underrated and overlooked soul legends. We’re also airing classics like “Nina Simone: Live at Montreux” and “Gladys Knight & The Pips: One Voice,” as well as new episodes of “Soul Cycle” featuring Ashford & Simpson.
So tune in all month long and join us as we celebrate the rich history and bright future of black music!
