Westside Story Inspired Indie Rock Music Video

Introduction
Westside Story is one of the most iconic and influential musicals of all time. The original production debuted on Broadway in 1957 and was subsequently made into a highly successful film in 1961. The story centers around the rivalry between two teenage gangs, the Sharks and the Jets, in the Upper West Side neighborhood of New York City.
The Sharks are a Puerto Rican gang while the Jets are a white gang. The rivalry between the two groups is exacerbated by the fact that Tony, a former Jet, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Shark leader Bernardo. The situation comes to a head when Maria’s brother is killed by one of the Jets, leading to a tragic chain of events.
Although Westside Story is set in the 1950s, its themes of racial tension and rival gangs are still relevant today. In this music video, we seek to update the story for a modern audience while still paying homage to the original musical. Our video is set in present day Los Angeles and follows two teenage gangs, the Vatos Locos and the Bloods. The Vatos Locos are a Latino gang while the Bloods are an African American gang. We chose to set our video in LA because it is one of the most diverse cities in America and because it has a long history of gang violence.
We hope that our video will provide a new take on an old classic while also shining a light on some of the social issues that continue to plague our country today.

Or see that movie, I’m transported back to my youth

The Visuals
The video opens with a POV shot of a girl running down a busy city street. She’s wearing a bright red dress and her hair is flowing behind her in the wind. The camera follows her as she weaves in and out of people, until she reaches the edge of a roof. She stops and looks out at the skyline for a moment before she jumps off.
As she falls, the camera cuts to different shots of her face – close ups of her eyes and mouth as she screams. Then, just before she hits the ground, the camera catches her in slow motion, spinning gracefully through the air.
The video cuts to black and then we see the girl again, this time walking slowly down a dark alley. She’s wearing all black now and there’sa thoughtful expression on her face. The camera follows her as she climbs up onto a fire escape and then into an abandoned building.
Inside, she finds a group of people dancing and singing. They look happy and carefree, and she joins in with them. The video ends with a shot of the girl smiling and looking out at the city from her rooftop vantage point.
Conclusion
