Folk music has been around for centuries, and it’s origins can be traced back to a variety of cultures and traditions. In this blog post, we explore the history of folk music and where it comes from.

Origins of Folk Music

Folk music is a genre of music that is typically passed down from generation to generation orally. It is music that is not written down or notated, but rather is learned by ear. Folk music often has a rustic or old-fashioned feel to it, and it is often played on acoustic instruments. Folk music is found all over the world, and it has been a part of human culture for thousands of years.

Traditional Folk Music

Traditional Folk Music is music that has been passed down orally, from generation to generation. This type of music is usually specific to a certain region or culture. Many traditional folk songs are about the everyday lives of the people who sing them, and they often tell stories about love, loss, work, and play. Folk music has been around for centuries, and it is still being sung today.

Contemporary Folk Music

Today, folk music is often used to describe a wide range of music that is connected to traditional music but has been influenced by more recent pop culture. It can be tricky to pinpoint the origins of contemporary folk music, but one theory is that it developed out of the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s. This was a time when many people were interested in reconnecting with their cultural roots and rediscovering traditional forms of music.

One of the most famous contemporary folk musicians is Bob Dylan, who started out as a part of the folk revival scene in New York City. He was heavily influenced by older musicians like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, but he also incorporated elements of rock and roll, blues, and country into his own unique sound. Dylan’s original songs struck a chord with young people all over the world, and he remains an influential force in folk music today.

##Heading: Form
##Expansion:
Folk songs often have a simple verse-chorus form. This means that the song has a main section (the verse) that is repeated several times. In between each repetition of the verse, there is a shorter section (the chorus). The chorus usually has a different melody from the verse, but it contains the same words each time it is sung.

Melody

Folk music usually has a simple melody. A folk song might have just one or two tunes that are repeated. The words of the song are usually more important than the tune.

Sometimes a folk song will have a chorus (a repeated section). This is often the part of the song that is easiest to remember, and so people can sing along even if they do not know all the words.

Rhythm

Folk music is a type of music that is passed down from generation to generation. It is usually only passed down within certain families or groups of people. Folk music often has a very simple structure, and it is usually based on acoustic instruments. The rhythm of folk music is usually very simple and repetitive. This type of music often has a lot of oral tradition behind it.

Instruments Used in Folk Music

Folk music is a type of music that is passed down from generation to generation. It is usually passed down orally, but it can also be passed down through sheet music. Folk music is usually played on acoustic instruments, such as guitars, banjos, and fiddles.

String Instruments

There are four main types of folk music instruments: string, percussion, wind, and keyboard. Each type of instrument has a different role to play in a folk music ensemble.

String instruments include the guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and ukulele. These instruments are typically played with the fingers or a pick. They provide the melody and harmony for a folk song.

Percussion instruments include the drums, cymbals, triangle, and washboard. These instruments keep the rhythm for a folk song.

Wind instruments include the flute, penny whistle, and accordion. These instruments provide melody and harmony for a folk song.

Keyboard instruments include the piano and organ. These instruments provide accompaniment for a folk song.

Wind Instruments

Wind instruments are a staple in traditional and contemporary folk music. The most common wind instrument is the flute, which is often used as the lead instrument in Celtic music. Other popular wind instruments include the tin whistle, recorder, harmonica, and accordion.

The sound of the accordion is particularly associated with folk music from Central and Eastern Europe, while the tin whistle is more commonly associated with Irish and Scottish music. In addition to these more traditional folk instruments, many contemporary folk bands make use of saxophones, trumpets, and trombones to add a touch of jazz or rock to their sound.

Percussion Instruments

Percussion instruments are an important part of folk music, and there are many different types that can be used. Some common ones include drums, cymbals, and gongs. These instruments can be played alone or in groups, and they often provide the rhythm for the other instruments to follow.

Drums are perhaps the most important type of percussion instrument in folk music. They can be played with the hands, sticks, or brushes, and they come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The most common type of drum used in folk music is the snare drum, which has a set of wires (called snares) stretched across the bottom head that produce a rattling sound when the drum is played. Other popular types of drums include bass drums, tom-toms, and bongos.

Cymbals are another popular type of percussion instrument, and they come in many different sizes and shapes. The most common type of cymbal used in folk music is the crash cymbal, which is used to provide a sudden burst of sound. Ride cymbals are also popular, and they are often used to keep time for the other instruments. Hi-hats are a type of cymbal that consists of two plates that are struck together, and they are often used to create a steady “chick” sound.

Gongs are large circular plates that are struck with a mallet to produce a deep “booming” sound. They come in a variety of sizes, and they are often used to add dramatic effect to a piece of music.
