Introduction

The success of crossover artists is nothing new — in fact, it’s been happening for decades. But which musicians have been able to achieve crossover success? Here are 10 artists who have reached Number 1 on both the Pop and Black music charts.

Pop and Black Music Charts

According to a recent study, there are a few musicians who have managed to reach the number one spot on both the pop and black music charts. Some of these musicians include Beyonce, Rihanna, and Drake. This study shows that these musicians have a large fan base that spans across different demographic groups.

Billboard Hot 100

The Billboard Hot 100 is the music industry standard record chart in the United States for singles, published weekly by Billboard magazine. Chart rankings are based on sales (physical and digital), radio play, and online streaming in the United States.

The following is a list of musicians who have reached number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The charts represent different measuring criteria, with the Hot 100 measuring overall popularity of a song, and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart measuring popularity specifically among African American audiences.

Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs

The Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart ranks the most popular R&B and hip hop songs in the United States and is published weekly by Billboard magazine. The data is compiled by Nielsen SoundScan based on each song’s weekly digital sales, as well as airplay and streaming.

Here are the artists who’ve had No. 1 songs on both the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and the Billboard Hot 100.

Musicians Who Reached Number 1 on Both Charts

Beginning in the late 1950s, a handful of musicians have had the rare distinction of topping both the Billboard pop singles chart and the magazine’s R&B chart with the same song. The list of artists who have accomplished this feat is short, but includes some of the biggest names in music history.

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson is one of the few musicians who has reached number one on both the Pop and Black Music charts. Jackson’s career began when he was just a child, as a member of the Jackson 5. He quickly rose to fame with his remarkable talent and charisma. As a solo artist, he achieved even greater success, with hits such as “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” and “Thriller.” Jackson’s influence extends beyond music; he is also credited with helping to break down racial barriers in the entertainment industry.

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She rose to prominence with her eponymous debut album in 1990 and achieved greater success with her follow-up albums Emotions (1991) and Music Box (1993). Carey is the only artist in history to have their first five singles reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, from “Vision of Love” to “Someday”. She has completed numerous record-breaking runs on the Hot 100, including most number one singles for a solo artist (eighteen; second overall behind The Beatles), most cumulative weeks at number one (79; third overall) and most weeks in the top ten (203). Throughout her career, Carey has sold more than 200 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

In 1998, Carey released her widely successful album #1’s, which contained all eighteen of her number one Hot 100 singles up to that point. The album reached number one in several countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia. In the United States, it sold over fifteen million copies and is certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In total, she has released eighty-onenumber-one songs on various Billboard charts worldwide.

Beyoncé

Beyoncé reached the top of both the pop and black music charts with her 2003 single “Crazy in Love.” The song, which features a guest rap from Jay-Z, peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It remained atop the latter for 11 weeks, making it Beyoncé’s longest-running number one single on that chart.

Conclusion

It is safe to say that these musicians have had legendary careers in both the pop and black music charts. They have achieved success in a variety of genres and have cemented their place in music history.
