His life
George Nooks is a Jamaican reggae singer who has had a prolific career spanning over four decades. He began his career in the 1970s as a harmonies singer for The Techniques, before going on to have a successful solo career with hits such as “One Way Ticket”, “Tears on My Pillow” and “Just My Imagination”. In recent years, he has been active in the gospel genre, releasing albums such as 2011’s God is Standing By.
His work
George Nooks (born 1951), better known as Prince Mohammed, is a Jamaican reggae singer. He was one of the most popular vocalists of the 1980s, recording with such producers as Sly & Robbie, Winston Riley, and Henry Junjo Lawes. Throughout his career he has used a number of pseudonyms, including Prince Mohammed and Tex Dixon. His album Trouble was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1985. In 2006 he won the Jamaican MOBO Award for Best Gospel Act.
Nooks was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He first recorded under the name Prince Mohammed in 1976, with the single “No More Heartaches”, produced by Bunny Lee. He then changed his name to Tex Dixon and recorded “One Two Three”. His next release was “I’ve Got To Go Back Home”, recorded with Stanley Beckford, which was followed by “Take It Easy” and an album of the same name. These were produced by Winston Riley.
