In 1965 they received Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Performance by a Vocal Group for “A Hard Day’s Night”. “Yesterday” became their first song to appear on American charts after it was re-recorded by another artist without their permission. In 1967 they released “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” which won four Grammy Awards including Album of the Year; it has since sold more than 32 million copies worldwide. Other songs released in 1967 include “All You Need Is Love”, “I Am the Walrus”, ” Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields Forever”. The Beatles continued to release commercially successful singles throughout 1968 including “Hey Jude” which spent nine weeks at number one in Britain; it remains their longest-charting UK single. In November 1968 they performed live for the last time together before Lennon left the group due to creative differences; he was replaced by former Beatle guitarist Billy Preston for 1969’s Get Back sessions which led to their final album Abbey Road.

The Rolling Stones

Formed in London in 1962, the original lineup consisted of Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (guitar, vocals), Bill Wyman (bass), Charlie Watts (drums), and Ian Stewart (piano). Stewart was removed from the official lineup in 1963 but continued to tour and record with the band as a contracted musician until his death in 1985. Jones died less than a month after recording started for Beggars Banquet (1968). Replacement members included Mick Taylor on guitar and Ronnie Wood on guitar, who joined in 1975 and 1976 respectively.

As a result of creative and financial tensions, Wyman retired from the band in 1993. Darryl Jones has been the main bassist since 1994, while keyboardist Chuck Leavell toured with the Stones from 1989 until he officially became a member in 1995. The Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004. Rolling Stone ranked them fourth on their “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” list and their estimated record sales are above 250 million. They have released 30 studio albums, 18 live albums and numerous compilations.

Bob Dylan
