They are considered by many as the greatest and most influential band of all time. With a line-up including John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, they are commonly known as “the Fab Four”. The Beatles built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over a three-year period from 1960, exclusively with skiffle group The Quarrymen since 1957. Stuart Sutcliffe was the original bass player for the band; he was later replaced by Paul McCartney.

In August 1969, upon their return from America and a period of seclusion at Ringo Starr’s estate in Scotland, The Beatles convened at Abbey Road Studios to begin work on what would become their final studio album: Abbey Road. Although Let It Be was ultimately released first (in May 1970), Abbey Road was recorded last and is therefore regarded as the climax of The Beatles’ work as a group. It is also seen as one of the most influential albums of all time.

ABBA

ABBA is a Swedish pop group formed in Stockholm in 1972 by Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The group’s name is an acronym of the first letters of their first names. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, topping the charts worldwide from 1974 to 1982. ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 at The Dome in Brighton, UK, giving Sweden its first triumph in the contest. They are the most successful group to have taken part in the competition.

ABBA’s record sales figures are uncertain and various estimates range from 140 to 500 million albums and singles sold worldwide. They have released eight studio albums, three live albums, and numerous compilations. Their first international hit was “Waterloo”, which reached number six in the UK in 1974 and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Record of the Year at the 17th Annual Grammy Awards in 1975. This was followed by a string of hits including “Mamma Mia”, ” Fernando”, “Dancing Queen”, “Knowing Me, Knowing You”, and “The Winner Takes It All”. In 1975, their self-titled album became the first pop album to reach number one in Australia for six consecutive weeks.

The group’s popularity declined sharply following their break-up in late 1982, but ABBA continues to be a global phenomenon with legacy that remains popular over four decades after their disbandment. Their music has been re-released several times, spawning several television movies, Stage musicals, video games and a film series adaptation of their songs as well as several biographies and documentaries about them.
