Below is the list of nominees for the 2010 International Reggae and World Music Awards. The IRWMA’s are given out annually to recognize achievement in the reggae and world music genres. This year’s list features some of the biggest names in both genres, including Buju Banton, Ziggy Marley, and Fela Kuti.

2010 International Reggae and World Music Awards Winners

The 2010 International Reggae and World Music Awards nomination list was announced on March 1, 2010. The awards will be given out at a ceremony on May 1, 2010, in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The awards are given in recognition of outstanding achievement in the reggae and world music industry.

Album of the Year

Artist of the Year

The nominees for Artist of the Year are considered to be the most successful and – three reggae artists who achieved the highest level of international recognition in 2010.

Best New Artist

I-Octane was the big winner at the 2010 International Reggae and World Music Awards, taking home four awards, including Best New Artist. Other top winners included Beenie Man, who won three awards, and Bounty Killer, who won two.

Best Male Artist

Buju Banton was the big winner at the 2010 International Reggae and World Music Awards, picking up three trophies.

The Jamaican artist, who is currently serving a 10-year jail sentence in the United States on drug-related charges, won awards for Best Male Artist, Best Live Performer and Song of the Year for his track “Last War.”

Bounty Killer was another multiple winner, taking home the prizes for Best DJ and ‘Best Collaboration’ for his work with Libyan rebel leader Muammar Gaddafi on the track “Guns Don’t Kill People, People Kill People.”

Best Live Act

Jamaican reggae artiste Admiral Tibet took home the Best Live Act award at the 2010 International Reggae and World Music Awards held on Sunday night at the All-State Arena in Chicago, Illinois.

Tibet, who was not in attendance, was up against some tough competition in the form of African artistes Youssou N’Dour, Angelique Kidjo and Salif Keita, as well as American soul/R&B legend Smokey Robinson.

However, it was Tibet whose name was announced as the winner by hosts Michaelaucio and Queen Ifrica.

Best DJ

DJs play an important role in the reggae and world music scene, acting as both entertainers and tastemakers. The best DJs are able to keep people dancing all night long while also introducing them to new music.

The International Reggae and World Music Awards aim to recognize the achievements of DJs from all over the world. This year, the award for Best DJ goes to DJ Paxahau from Detroit, Michigan.

Paxahau is a founding member of the Detroit-based record label and event company Paxahau Promotions. He is also a resident DJ at the famed nightclub The Shelter, which is widely considered to be one of the birthplaces of techno music.

Paxahau is known for his ability to seamlessly mix different genres of music, making him a perfect choice for Best DJ at this year’s International Reggae and World Music Awards.

Phillip “Fattis” Burrell – Winner

Burrell is best known for his work with Buju Banton, Beenie Man, and Capleton. He has produced some of the biggest reggae and dancehall hits of the past two decades, including Buju Banton’s “Murder She Wrote” and Beenie Man’s “Who Am I.” Burrell is also the founder of Xterminator Records, one of the most influential reggae labels of the 1990s and 2000s.
