Best New Artist

Congratulations to the winner of the Best New Artist award at the 2016 Soul Train Music Awards, Anderson .Paak! Anderson .Paak is a singer, songwriter, and record producer from Oxnard, California. He has released two studio albums, Venice and Malibu, and has collaborated with a number of other artists, including Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, and Snoop Dogg.

Bryson Tiller

Bryson Tiller is an American singer, songwriter and rapper. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he started his musical career in 2011, releasing the mixtape Killer Instinct Vol.1. In 2015, Tiller released his debut studio album, Trapsoul, which peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 and received platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). His commercial success was followed by the release of his second album, True to Self (2017), which debuted atop the Billboard 200. As of October 2017, Tiller’s “Don’t” is his highest-charting single on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 13.

Anderson .Paak

The 2016 Soul Train Music Awards were held on November 6, 2016 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The awards ceremony was hosted by Tisha Campbell-Martin and Doug E. Fresh. The event recognizing the best in soul, R&B, and hip-hop music from the past year was headlined by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Maxwell, and Khalid.

Best New Artist was awarded to Anderson .Paak. Paak is a rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer from Oxnard, California. He has released two studio albums, “Malibu” (2016) and “Venice” (2014), and has collaborated with Dr. Dre, Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, and more.

Best R&B/Soul Female Artist

The 2016 Soul Train Music Awards were held on Sunday, November 27, at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas and was hosted by Erykah Badu. The award for Best R&B/Soul Female Artist went to Beyoncé.

Beyoncé

The beautiful and talented Beyoncé Knowles-Carter took home the award for Best R&B/Soul Female Artist at the 2016 Soul Train Music Awards. The “Formation” singer was up against some stiff competition this year, including fellow nominees Rihanna, Ciara, and Sevyn Streeter.

Beyoncé has had an incredible year, with the release of her highly acclaimed album Lemonade and an unforgettable performance at the Super Bowl 50 halftime show. She’s also been busy touring the world with her Formation World Tour, which kicked off in Miami in April and will wrap up in New York City in October.

The Soul Train Music Awards were established in 1987 to honor African American musicians and music industry professionals. This year’s awards ceremony was held on November 6th at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rihanna

Rihanna is a Barbadian singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman. Born in Saint Michael and raised in Bridgetown, Barbados, Rihanna was discovered by American record producer Evan Rogers in her home country in 2003. Throughout 2004, she recorded demo tapes under the direction of Rogers which led to her signing a recording contract with Def Jam Recordings after auditioning for its then-president, hip hop producer and rapper Jay-Z. In 2005, Rihanna rose to prominence with the release of her debut studio album Music of the Sun and its follow-up A Girl like Me (2006), which charted on the top 10 of the US Billboard 200 and respectively produced the successful singles “Pon de Replay” and “SOS”. She assumed creative control for her third studio album Good Girl Gone Bad (2007) and adopted a public image as a sex symbol while reinventing her music. Its successful lead single “Umbrella” became an international breakthrough in her career, as she won her first Grammy Award at the 2008 ceremony.

Rihanna’s fourth studio album, Rated R (2009), showcased a new creative control following her departure from Def Jam. It produced four commercially successful singles—the worldwide hit “Only Girl (In the World)”, “Rude Boy”, which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, “Hard” and “Rockstar 101”. Her fifth studio album Loud (2010) yielded five singles—its title track being one among them. Its lead single “Only Girl (In the World)” peaked at number one on over ten charts worldwide including Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden and the United Kingdom; it reached number one on every chart that Billboard compiles for Mainstream Top 40 radio play excepting Japanhot adult contemporary radio where it peaked at number three. Loud was nominated for six Grammy Awards at 54th ceremony held in 2012; it won Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for its title track which features American rapper Jay-Z. Alongside a successful music career, Rihanna is well known for embracing various fashion styles – including Military fashion[200][201] Gothic fashion,[202] goth-chic[203][204][205] haute couture,[206] punk fashion,[207][208] Rastafarian[209] – thereby becoming a trendsetter in both mainstream and alternative fashion circles.[210][211][212]

Best R&B/Soul Male Artist

The 2016 Soul Train Music Awards were held at the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino on November 6, 2016. The awards ceremony celebrates the best in R&B, soul, and hip-hop music. This year’s winners were announced in a total of 22 different categories.

Usher

Usher won the award for Best R&B/Soul Male Artist at the 2016 Soul Train Music Awards. He beat out fellow nominees Bryson Tiller, Chris Brown, Maxwell, and The Weeknd.

Chris Brown

Chris Brown is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. Born in Tappahannock, Virginia, he was involved in his church choir and several local talent shows from a young age. Having signed with Jive Records in 2004, Brown released his self-titled debut studio album the following year. It peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200 and was later certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). With his first single “Run It!” peaking atop the US Billboard Hot 100, Brown became the first male artist as a lead since Diddy in 1997 to have his debut single top the chart. His second album Exclusive (2007) spawned his second Hot 100 number one “Kiss Kiss”, in addition to “With You” and “Forever”. The album was also certified double platinum by the RIAA. In 2009, Brown received significant media attention after pleading guilty to felony assault of singer Rihanna; he was sentenced to five years of probation and six months of community service.

Song of the Year

This year’s Soul Train Music Awards were handed out last night, and the big winner was Beyonce with her song, “Formation.” The songstress took home a total of four awards, including Best R&B/Soul Female Artist.

“Formation” – Beyoncé

“Formation” is a song recorded by American singer Beyoncé for her sixth studio album, Lemonade (2016). The song was written by Beyoncé, Michael L. Williams II, Achraf Janussi, Khalif Brown, Asheton Hogan, and Ray Blk. “Formation” was released on February 6, 2016, alongside a music video directed by Melina Matsoukas.

The song debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 10, making it Beyoncé’s highest-charting single since “Run the World (Girls)” in 2011. “Formation” also charted at number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and Hot R&B Songs chart. In the United Kingdom, “Formation” entered at number 35 on the UK Singles Chart becoming Beyoncé’s thirty-fifth top 40 hit in the UK.

“No Limit” – Usher ft. Young Thug

“No Limit” is a song by American recording artist Usher, featuring Atlanta-based rapper Young Thug. It was released on September 16, 2016 as the lead single from Usher’s forthcoming eighth studio album Hard II Love (2016). The collaboration between the two artists was released as a single after several months of teasers on social media. The track was produced by Mike Will Made It and co-produced by Sean “DA Doman” Lemoine.

The song peaked at number 43 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and at number 19 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Album/Mixtape of the Year

It’s that time of year again! The Soul Train Music Awards are back, and this year’s winners have been announced. The album/mixtape of the year goes to…drumroll please…Beyonce for Lemonade! This marks Beyonce’s third win in this category.

Lemonade – Beyoncé

The 2016 Soul Train Music Awards were held on November 6, 2016 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The awards ceremony celebrates the best in soul, R&B, and hip hop music. This year’s event was hosted by actor and comedian Marlon Wayans.

The awards are given out in a variety of categories, with the top prize being the Album/Mixtape of the Year. This year, the award went to Beyoncé for her album Lemonade. Other nominees for the award included Chance the Rapper, Drake, and Solange Knowles.

Anti – Rihanna

Rihanna’s eighth studio album, Anti, was released in January 2016 to critical acclaim. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making it Rihanna’s second album to debut at number one on the chart. Anti also became Rihanna’s first album to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in February 2016.
