Music

The Movement Electronic Music Festival is an annual event that takes place in Detroit, Michigan. The event is three days long and features over one hundred different musical acts. This year’s festival is taking place from May 24-26.

Techno

Techno is a form of electronic dance music that originated in Detroit, Michigan in the United States during the mid-to-late 1980s. The first recorded use of the word techno in reference to a specific genre of music was in 1988. Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of subgenres have been built.

Techno is generally repetitive instrumental music produced for use in a continuous DJ set. The central rhythmic component is most often in common time (4/4), where time is marked by the primary beat structures (kick and snare). Often, producers use secondary loops (often sampled from earlier records) to create several layers within the track, resulting in a sound that develops over time.

The tempo of Techno ranges from 120bpm to 150bpm.

House

House is a genre of electronic dance music characterized by a repetitive four-on-the-floor beat and a tempo of 120 to 130 beats per minute. It was created by DJs and producers in the Chicago club scene in the early 1980s. House music was originally designed for nightclubs, but it has since evolved and been appropriated by many different subcultures.

Drum and Bass

Drum and bass (also written as “drum ‘n’ bass” or “drum & bass”; abbreviated as “D&B”, “DnB” or “D’n’B”) is a genre of electronic music characterised by fast breakbeats (typically between 160–180 beats per minute) with heavy bass and sub-bass lines, overlaid with sampled sources. It grew out of the jungle/rave scene in Britain during the early 1990s as artists deliberately slowed down existing jungle tracks to half time giving birth to what was later labelled double-time, giving rise to both the darkcore and techstep styles that dominated until the mid-late 1990s. Drum and bass incorporates a number of subgenres including breakcore, darkstep, hardstep, jump up, minimal drum and bass, neurofunk, techstep and many more.

Other genres

In addition to the five main genres, there are many other sub-genres and micro-genres that make up the fabric of electronic music. To name a few: 2-step, 4/4, 8-bit, acid, ambient, Balearic beat, breakbeat, Chicago house, conscious dance music, crunk, darkstep, Detroit techno, digital hardcore, dubstep, future bass… the list goes on!
