The 2021 Blues Music Awards – also known as the “Oscars of the blues” – will be held virtually on May 6. This prestigious annual event recognizes the best and brightest in blues music, with awards given in a variety of categories.

The 2021 nominees were announced in early April, and the list includes some of the biggest names in blues today. Among the nominees are Joe Bonamassa, Buddy Guy, Shemekia Copeland, and Fantastic Negrito.

The nominees for the 2021 awards

The history of the awards

The 2021 Blues Music Awards will be the 39th edition of the annual awards show, which recognizing excellence in blues music. The awards are presented by the Blues Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Memphis, Tennessee.

The first edition of the award show was held iniciially as the W.C. Handy Awards in 1980, and was created to recognize excellence in recorded blues music. In 1985, the award show was expanded to include live performance categories, and renamed the Blues Music Awards.

The award show has been held annually since 1980, with the exception of 2020 when it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The future of the awards

The future of the awards is unclear, as the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many changes in the music industry. The award show was postponed from May 9 to September 30, 2021, and it is not yet known if the event will be held in person or online.
