Since the 1920s Jazz Age, jazz has become recognized as a major form of musical expression. It then emerged in the form of independent traditional and popular musical styles, all linked by the common bonds of African-American and European-American musical parentage with a performance orientation. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals,
polyrhythms and improvisation.

Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical expression, and in African-American music traditions including blues and ragtime. Its immediate origins are in the late 19th century Ragtime songs “Some of These Days” by Shelton Brooks and Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer”, along with Irving Berlin’s 1911 composition “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”. Jazz began to be played professionally by bands in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood heaving been popularized earlier among African Americans living upriver from New Orleansin places such as Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Kansas City, Memphis and Tulsa.

Over the course of the 20th century, jazz spread around the world, evolving into a variety of different styles. Today, jazz is enjoyed by listeners of all ages and is widely considered to be one of America’s greatest cultural contributions.

Characteristics of Jazz

Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on different national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to many distinctive styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. In the 1930s, heavily arranged dance-oriented swing big bands, Kansas City jazz (featuring blues influence) milder Louisiana styles (also featuring blues influence) became the dominant sounds of jazz. A distinguishing feature of jazz is rhythmic tension created by contrasting use of triplets or sixteenth notes against straight eighths (quavers). As well, formative elements such as call-and-response horns (derived from field hollers), last chorus/out chorus (borrowed from vaudeville shows for encores), songs without words or narrative structures (based on Afro-Caribbean vocal techniques) have all been used extensively in jazz compositions throughout its history.
