Cobain was inspired to write the song when he was informed by his wife Courtney Love that their friend Mary Lou Lord was beginning to become successful.

The song’s chorus features the line “I’m so happy ’cause today I found my friends.” Cobain has said that this line came from a video he once saw by Christian rock band Daniel Amos, in which singer Terry Scott Taylor said “Today I found my friends, they’re in my head.” In an interview with Guitar World in February 1992, Cobain said that the lyrics were meant to be “tongue-in-cheek” and that he was not actually referring to Lord when he wrote them.

The music video for “Lithium” was directed by Francesco Maselli and features Nirvana performing in front of a live audience. It was filmed in Los Angeles on December 6, 1991 and released in January 1992.
