The Best Albums of 2020

As the 2010s come to a close, Paste is taking a look back at the best indie folk albums of the decade. We asked our staff to vote on their favorite folk albums released since 2010, and our No. 1 pick might surprise you.

The list includes everything from singer-songwriter staring contests (see: John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats) to politically minded anthems (see: Ani DiFranco) to psychedelic country odysseys (see: Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats). And while there’s always been a healthy mix of outdoorsy, rustic sounds and urban, city-slicker vibes within the indie folk world, this decade has seen a marked increase in the latter, as artists from Laura Marling to Bon Iver have found new ways to combine traditional folk instrumentation with electronic production techniques.

So without further ado, here are the 20 best indie folk albums of the 2010s, as voted by the Paste staff.
