The Virginia Folk Music Association (VFMA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of traditional music and dance from Virginia and the surrounding region.
We work to achieve our mission through public performances, educational programs, grants, research, and other activities that support our members and the community.
The VFMA was founded in 1971 by a group of folk musicians and music lovers who saw the need for an organization to promote and preserve the traditional music of Virginia. In the nearly 50 years since its founding, the VFMA has grown into a statewide organization with members from all over Virginia and the surrounding region.
The History of the Virginia Folk Music Association
The Virginia Folk Music Association (VFMA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving the traditional music of Virginia.
The VFMA was founded in 1961 by a group of folk musicians and enthusiasts who were concerned about the declining popularity of traditional music in Virginia. Since then, the VFMA has worked to promote and preserve Virginia’s musical heritage by sponsoring concerts, dances, workshops, festivals, and other events.
The VFMA is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, and has members throughout the state. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in Virginia’s traditional music.
The Purpose of the Virginia Folk Music Association
The purpose of the Virginia Folk Music Association shall be to promote, sponsor, advance and preserve the traditional music of Virginia and the Southeastern United States; to educate its members and the general public in all aspects of traditional music; and to provide a forum for musicians, singers, dancers and others interested in this musical heritage.
The Activities of the Virginia Folk Music Association
The Activities of the Virginia Folk Music Association, Inc. include but are not limited to: promoting, preserving and perpetuating traditional music, dance and related folk arts of Virginia; conducting research into the folk arts of Virginia; providing educational opportunities in the folk arts of Virginia for both adults and children; maintaining a resource center of books, recordings and other materials on the folk arts of Virginia; sponsoring an annual festival of traditional music, dance and related folk arts; and cooperating with other agencies and organizations having similar purposes.
