A look at the top Latin music hits from 2010 and what made them so popular.

Introduction

In the 2010s, bachata, reggaeton and Latin trap became popular genres while salsa and merengue experienced a decline in popularity. Reggaeton artists such as Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Wisin & Yandel and Pitbull were some of the most successful Latin artists of the decade. Bachata group Aventura became one of the most successful bachata groups of all time before going on hiatus in 2011. Romeo Santos, Prince Royce and Ozuna were some of the most successful Bachata singers of the 2010s.

“Despacito” by Luis Fonsi ft. Daddy Yankee

“Despacito” is a song by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi featuring Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee from the former’s upcoming studio album. The song was released on January 13, 2017, and has since become a massive success, reaching number one in numerous countries, including the United States, Australia, and France. In the United States, “Despacito” became the first predominantly Spanish-language song to top the Billboard Hot 100 since “Macarena” (Bayside Boys Mix) in 1996, as well as the first Latin song to reach number one since 2013’s “Harlem Shake”. It is also Fonsi’s first number-one single in the Hot 100 and daddy Yankee’s fourth. The music video for “Despacito” has been viewed over 4 billion times on YouTube as of August 2017, making it the most watched YouTube video of all time.

“Bailando” by Enrique Iglesias ft. Descemer Bueno & Gente de Zona was one of the top Latin music hits in the 2010’s. The song was released in 2014 and quickly rose to the top of the charts, becoming one of the most popular songs of the decade. The song features a catchy beat and infectious melody that has led to it being played on radio stations across the world. “Bailando” has been certified platinum in several countries and has won numerous awards, including a Latin Grammy Award for Song of the Year.

“El Perdón” by Nicky Jam & Enrique Iglesias

“El Perdón” by Nicky Jam & Enrique Iglesias is a latin pop song released in 2015. The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart and has been certified five times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

“Hasta el Amanecer” by Nicky Jam

“Hasta el Amanecer” is a song recorded by Colombian reggaeton singer Nicky Jam from his tenth studio album Fénix. The song was released on January 13, 2017, through Sony Music Latin as the lead single from the album. written by Jam and produced by Afro Bros, it is a reggaeton and trap song with lyrics about a one-night stand. Commercially, the song peaked at number one in Belgium and Spain, and within the top five in France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Switzerland and the United States.

“La Bicicleta” by Carlos Vives & Shakira

“La Bicicleta” is a song by Colombian singer Carlos Vives and Lebanese-born Colombian singer Shakira, released on 27 May 2016 as the lead single from Vives’ fifteenth studio album, Love + Sex (2017). It was written by Vives, Shakira, Kevin ADG and Andrés Castro, and produced by Shakira’s longtime associate Luis Fernando Ochoa.

Its music video has been viewed over 1.6 billion times on YouTube as of July 2020, becoming one of the site’s 40 most-viewed videos. In the United States, “La Bicicleta” peaked at number 23 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart and was certified three times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Commercially, it peaked atop the Latin Airplay chart in both Colombia and the United States.

“Chantaje” by Shakira ft. Maluma

“Chantaje” by Shakira ft. Maluma reached the top of the Latin Songs chart in 2016 and stayed there for a total of seventeen weeks. It was also preformed at the 2017 Grammy Awards.

“Duele el Corazón” by Enrique Iglesias ft. Wisin

In 2016, Enrique Iglesias released “Duele el Corazón” as a single from his tenth studio album. The song, which features Puerto Rican rapper Wisin, topped the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart for 15 weeks, making it the longest-running number-one single of Iglesias’ career.

“Subeme la Radio” by Enrique Iglesias ft. Descemer Bueno, Zion & Lennox

“Subeme la Radio” is a song by Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias featuring Cuban singers Descemer Bueno and Zion & Lennox. It was released on 2 February 2017, through Sony Music Latin. The song was written by Iglesias, Bueno, Zion & Lennox and Bachata Heightz members Eddy “Love” Rivera and Edgar “Varon” Castro. Production was handled by Rascal, Sky and Gaby Music. A Spanish-language version of the song as well as a Spanglish version were both released.

A music video for the song, directed by Carlos Pérez, was released on 14 February 2017. The video features Iglesias, Bueno, Zion & Lennox in a black-and-white setting dancing and singing to the song. As of May 2020, the video has received over 1.2 billion views on YouTube.

The song peaked at number one in Spain and on the US Hot Latin Songs chart, becoming Iglesias’ thirty-second number-one single on the latter. It also peaked at number one in Romania and Russia, and within the top ten of several other countries including Argentina, Chile and France.

“Te Boté” by Casper Mágico, Nio García, Darell, Bad Bunny & Ozuna

“Te Boté” (English: “I Got You”) is a song recorded by Puerto Rican musicians Casper Mágico, Nio García, Darell, Bad Bunny and Ozuna. It was released on April 13, 2018, by Hear This Music and Capitol Latin. The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart in the United States, becoming the first all-male collaboration to do so since “Dale Don Dale” by Don Omar in 2006.
