History of MTV
MTV is an American pay television channel owned by Viacom Media Networks (a division of Viacom) and headquartered in New York City. Launched on August 1, 1981, the channel originally aired music videos as guided by television personalities known as “video jockeys” (VJs).[2][3] At first, MTV’s main target demographic was young adults, but today it is primarily teenagers, particularly teenage girls.
MTV has toned down its music video programming significantly in recent years, and its programming now consists mainly of original reality and drama programming and some off-network syndicated programs and films, with limited music video programming in off-peak time periods. It has become difficult to find music videos on MTV due to the shift toward predominately original programming.[4]
MTV Awards
The MTV Video Music Awards are an annual awards ceremony established in 1984 by MTV. Originally conceived as an alternative to the Grammy Awards (in the video category), the annual VMAs versus Grammy debate continues nearly three decades later. The statue given to the winners, called the “Moonman”, is one of the most recognized music awards in the world.
The first VMA ceremony was held on September 14, 1984, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The awards recognized that year’s top music videos, determined by votes from cable broadcasters MTv, BET, and VH1. Michael Jackson and Madonna were the big winners, taking home a total of five Moonmen each.
In recent years, the Latin music industry has seen a boom in popularity. This is thanks in part to streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music, which have made it easier than ever for people to discover new music from all over the world. And while there are many award shows that celebrate Latin music (including the Latin Grammy Awards and Premio Lo Nuestro), none have quite the same reach or prestige as the VMAs.
This year, MTV is honoring Latin music once again with its very own award category: Best Latin Video. And while there are many deserving candidates, we’ve narrowed it down to five that we think are worthy of taking home the coveted Moonman trophy.

The network began broadcasting on September 8th of that year from a garage in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. It was originally called Spanish International Network (SIN).
The four men had different partnerships with other broadcasters before coming together to form SIN. Azcárraga Vidaurreta owned a Mexican television station called XHGC while Cortés Ferrán worked for Cuba’s Radio Cadena Suave. Sánchez Susmet ran a Miami-based station called KMEX which he eventually sold to Azcárraga Vidaurreta while Gómez Reznick owned WKBM in Chicago.
SIN was launched as a commercial-free network and quickly became popular with Spanish-speaking viewers in the United States. The network expanded rapidly throughout the 1960s and 1970s, opening new studios and offices in major cities across the country. By 1975, SIN was available in over 40 million homes across America.
In 1986, Azcárraga Vidaurreta died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 62. His son Emilio Azcárraga Milmo succeeded him as head of Univision. Under Azcárraga Milmo’s leadership, Univision continued to grow rapidly throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1992, Univision acquired Kirk Kerkorian’s interest in Galavisión—a Hispanic cable channel which had been launched in 1979—and made it into a separate company under Univision’s umbrella.
