The band’s early years were spent playing various gigs around Birmingham. In 1970, they released their first single, “Cherry Pie”, which was followed by their self-titled debut album in April 1971.

During the recording of their second album, Sad Wings of Destiny (1976), original singer Chataway left the band and was replaced by Rob Halford. In 1983, Rob Halford wore a leather bondage outfit onstage at San Francisco’s Kezar Stadium during the Worldmetal Carnage US tour to promote Screaming for Vengeance; this caused quite a stir among moral activists of that time. In addition, he frequently performed stunts onstage including riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and hanging from chains during performances of “Hell Bent for Leather”.

The ’90s and 2000s

The ’90s and 2000s were a tough period for metal bands in general, and Priest was no exception. Record labels were less willing to invest in guitar-based music, and the band was forced to adapt its sound to stay relevant. They experimented with industrial metal on the album “Painkiller” (1990), which was a commercial success, but their follow-up, “Jugulator” (1997) was less well-received. By the early 2000s, the band was in danger of being dropped by their label altogether.

Luckily, they found success once again with the release of “Angel of Retribution” (2005), which marked their return to a more traditional metal sound.
