What is Heavy Metal Music?
Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. The genre’s lyrics and performance styles are sometimes associated with aggression and machismo.
In 1970, Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi made one of rock’s first investments in a custom-made instrument by buying a Gibson Flying V. Created with input from Iommi himself, Gibson’s The guitarist then popularized the use of downward pitch bending while simultaneously pulling up on the tremolo arm—an altogether new approach to creating vibrato effects that continues to be employed by countless players today.
The Origins of Heavy Metal Music
Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States.
In 1970, four British bands—Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer—played what became known as the first heavy metal festival concert at the Roundhouse in London. Despite the cross-pollination of ideas from hard rock and progressive rock at this time, heavy metal remained rooted in blues-based boogie rock. English groups such as Judas Priest and Motorhead followed in the early 1970s. In October 1974 Deep Purple released “Mistreated”, an early example of a power ballad that would go on to have a major influence on subsequent rock music. Rainbow’s Rising featured Jeff Beck’s “Speed King” which was made using feedback; Psychedelic Furs’ “Sister Europe”; Johnny Winter’s cover of Muddy Waters’ “Rock Me Baby”; UFO’s “Doctor Doctor”; Cheap Trick’s “Surrender”; The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb”; Kiss’ “Strutter”; Queen’s “Tie Your Mother Down” (included on their album A Day at the Races); Boston’s More Than A Feeling; Aerosmith’s Walk This Way; Heart’s Crazy On You; Led Zeppelin’s Over The Hills And Far Away from Houses Of The Holy; Foghat’s Slow Ride; Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells Part One which featured on The Exorcist soundtrack (and went to number one in the US); Black Sabbath Paranoid; Budgie Breadfan; Uriah Heep Sweet Lolita; And Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird which reached number 19 on Billboard Hot 100 despite having no official single or video release.
The Different Types of Heavy Metal Music
There are many different types of heavy metal music. Some common types are death metal, black metal, thrash metal, and doom metal.
Death metal is a type of heavy metal music that often has fast drums and guitars, and growling vocals. The lyrics often deal with dark subject matter, such as death and violence.
Black metal is another type of heavy metal music that often has fast drums and guitars, but the vocals are often higher-pitched screams. The lyrics often deal with dark subject matter, such as death, violence, and Satanism.
Thrash metal is a type of heavy metal music that is similar to death metal and black metal in terms of the instruments and vocals used. However, the lyrics are typically less dark and more focused on social issues.
Doom metal is a type of heavy metal music that is characterized by slow speeds and a feeling of despair or darkness.
