What is Heavy Metal?

Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It has its roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, and often incorporates elements of those genres. With its heavy, riff-based guitars, drumming, and aggressive vocals, heavy metal is sometimes seen as aggressive and not suitable for everyone.

The Origins of Heavy Metal

Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It typically has a heavier sound and feel than other rock music.

Heavy metal bands often have guitarists who use distorted sounds, create solos using feedback from amplifiers, and employ heavy distortion and gain. Their lyrics often deal with dark subjects such as death, war, wrath, and betrayal.

The first heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple were influenced by existing hard rock bands. They created a new sound by adding more distortion to their guitars and using heavier drumming techniques.

Heavy metal quickly spread to other countries in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Bands such as Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Motörhead became popular in the United Kingdom, while megastars like Kiss and Alice Cooper rose to fame in the United States.

In the 1980s, glam metal bands such as Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard combined heavy metal with elements of glam rock to create a new subgenre. This look was typified by catchy hooks, flashy clothing, and big hair.

Today, there are many different subgenres of heavy metal, each with its own unique sound and style. Some of these include power metal, thrash metal, melodic death metal, doom metal, black metal, industrial metal, progressive metal, nu-metal, and more.

The Different Types of Heavy Metal

The Different Types of Heavy Metal

Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. The genre’s lyrics and performance styles are sometimes associated with aggression and machismo.

In 1970, three new British groups—Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin— spearheaded the heavy metal genre with a string of successful albums and sold-out concerts. Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut album (1970) distinguished itself from earlier blues-influenced hard rock by featuring doom-laden lyrics and a sludgy sound that influenced subsequent heavy metal bands. Deep Purple’s Machine Head (1972) became one of the most influential heavy metal albums of all time for its glossy production and its powerful quartet of hits: “Smoke on the Water,” “Space Truckin'”, “Highway Star”, and “Lazy”. Led Zeppelin’s untitled fourth album (1971), commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV or simply IV, combined elements of hard rock, folk music, medieval music, Eastern music, blues, country music, and Celtic music to create a sonic collage that many consider to be their masterpiece.

Other important early heavy metal bands include Uriah Heep (whose 1972 album Demons and Wizards featured the hit single “The Wizard”), Queen (whose 1974 album Sheer Heart Attack was anchored by the anthemic “Bohemian Rhapsody”), Aerosmith (whose 1975 album Toys in the Attic included the hits “Walk This Way” and “Sweet Emotion”), Kiss (whose 1974 self-titled debut album was powered by hits like “Strutter” and “Firehouse”), Judas Priest (whose 1976 breakthrough album Sad Wings of Destiny spawned classics like “Victim of Changes” and “The Ripper”), Rainbow (whose 1978 Down to Earth album yielded songs like “Since You’ve Been Gone” and “Lost in Hollywood”), Motörhead (whose 1977 self-titled debut featured an unrelenting speedmetal assault led by singer/bassist Lemmy Kilmister), Scorpions (who hit their commercial peak in 1984 with Love at First Sting), Whitesnake (who became one of MTV’s first bona fide headbangers with their 1987 self-titled album), Ozzy Osbourne (who reached mainstream success with his 1981 solo album Blizzard of Ozz after being fired from Black Sabbath), Metallica (who rose to prominence with their 1986 third album Master of Puppets), Pantera (whose 1990 Cowboys from Hell set them on course to become one of the most successful heavy metal bands of all time), Sepultura (whose 1991 fourth album Arise announced their arrival as one of thrash metal’s leading lights),and Tool (whose 1993 debut album Undertow signaled their arrival as one of alt-metal’s most inventive bands).

In the 1980s and 1990s, Heavy Metal went through a seriesof changes. A new generationof American bands— ledby Metallica , Megadeth , Anthrax , Slayer ,and Testament — brought fortha new waveof aggressive yet technically virtuosic thrash metal that would come to dominate muchof the genre in subsequent years. In Britain , meanwhile , a new breedof band s such as Iron Maiden , Def Leppard ,and Saxon continued to keep traditional heavy metal alive throughoutthe decade . At the same time , international acts such as Bon Jovi , Mö tley Crüe ,and Guns N’ Roses injected a new levelof commercialisminto what had been an underground scene .

With grunge having endedthe hegemonyof hair metalin America duringthe early Nineties ,a new eraof heavier yet more introspective American band s such as Alice In Chains , Soundgarden ,and Pearl Jam emergedto take its place . In Britain , meanwhile , acts such as Oasis were doing something similarwith Britpop . And while nu metalfollowedshortly thereafter —and would eventually give riseto even more commercially successful American outfit s such as Linkin Park —heavy metaldeclinedin popularity throughoutmuchof the world duringthe late Ninetiesand early 2000s .

That said ,the genre has recentlyseen somethingof a resurgencein popularity dueto several key factors . Among them arelink s beingmade betweenmetalcore(a subgenre characterizedby an amalgamationofthe sonic intensityof hardcore punkwith themelodic sensibilityoftraditional heavymetal )and mainstream success(particularly inthe US ); an increased focuson Internet marketing;and perhapsmost importantly —a younger generationthat has discovereda tastefor heavier music thanksin large partto video game culture(particularly rhythm gameslike Guitar Hero ). Whateverthe reason may befor this newfoundappreciationfor all thingsheavy —whetherit be simple nostalgiafor older fansor honest excitementfor newer ones — it seems certainthat heavy metaalis far from dead .
