The History of Heavy Metal

Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. The genre’s lyrics and performance styles are sometimes associated with aggression and machismo.

In 1970, Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut album laid the heavy groundwork for what was to come. Bolstered by their signature tune “Iron Man,” as well as other classics like “Paranoid” and “War Pigs,” Black Sabbath cemented themselves as not only innovators, but as originators of one of music’s most enduring genres. By 1973, albums like Deep Purple’s Machine Head and Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy had taken the heavy sound even further, fusing it with elements of hard rock to create an even more powerful sonic assault.

The following year saw the release of two albums that would go on to define the sound of heavy metal for generations to come: Blue Öyster Cult’s Agents of Fortune and Kiss’ Destroyer. These records saw metal begin to embrace a more theatrical approach, complete with flashy costumes, extravagant stage shows, and anthemic songs like “Don’t Fear The Reaper” and “Beth.” This new breed of metal band would come to be known as “arena rock,” due to their ability to fill massive stadiums with rabid fans.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, heavy metal continued to evolve, absorbing influences from a wide range of genres while also giving birth to a number of subgenres. Among the most popular subgenres were hair metal ( characterized by glossy productions and often humorous lyrics), thrash metal (a faster-paced variant that often incorporated social or political commentary in its lyrics), death metal (a dark and brutal style defined by guttural vocals and gruesome lyrical content), black metal (a dark and atmospheric style characterized by growled vocals and occult imagery), stoner metal (a slow-paced style influenced by psychedelic rock), Nu-metal (a blend of alternativemetalwithrapandgrunge)
