Black Sabbath disbanded in 1981, and McDonald went on to play with a number of different artists over the next few years, including Ozzy Osbourne and Whitesnake. In 1986, he formed the band Motorhead with bassist/vocalist Lemmy Kilmister. With Motorhead, McDonald recorded thirteen albums between 1986 and 2015. The band’s most recent album, Bad Magic (2015), peaked at #5 on the UK Albums Chart.

Motorhead disbanded in 2015 following the death of Lemmy Kilmister. Since then, McDonald has toured with numerous artists as a guest drummer. He is currently touring with Judas Priest.
