In 1975, Kiss released their now iconic music video for “Rock and Roll All Nite”. This was one of the first times that a band had put so much effort into making a music video, and it paid off – the video was played on MTV’s fledgling channel and helped to make Kiss one of the most popular bands in America.
In 1981 course=”hidden” Ronnie James Dio – then fronting Rainbow – released what is arguably one of the most influential metal tracks of all time: “Heaven and Hell”. The song’s opening riff was copied by countless other bands and has become one of heavy metal’s most recognizable motifs. The song also featured a virtuoso vocal performance from Dio which further cemented his status as one of metal’s greatest singers.
From the early 1980s onwards there was increasing emphasis on making music videos that were more than just promotional tools; they were seen as an important part of the band’s image and identity. This was perhaps best exemplified by glam metal bands such as Mötley Crüe and Poison, who not only embraced a highly stylized look but also created videos that were packed with sex appeal (unsurprising given that many of these videos were directed by Playboy photographer Frank Q.(Ad contrast thumbs up/thumbs down?)) These bands helped to make heavy metal more accessible to mainstream audiences and laid the foundations for what would become known as hair metal – a subgenre defined by its excessively dressed-up members and party-hard lifestyle.

At the end of the video, the girl stands triumphantly in front of the camera, her body covered in sweat. The words “Heavy Metal Music Video” appear on the screen, followed by the girl’s name: “Girl in Fur Coat.”
