Introduction

With so many great country music songs out there, it’s hard to narrow down the list to just 10. But that’s what we’ve tried to do here, with what we believe are the 10 greatest country music songs of all time.

This list includes classics from legends like Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, as well as more modern hits from artists like Garth Brooks and Brad Paisley. We’ve also included a few songs that might not be traditionally considered country, but which have nonetheless become major hits in the genre.

“I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston

“I Will Always Love You” is a song written and originally recorded in 1973 by American singer-songwriter, Dolly Parton. The song was included on Parton’s thirteenth solo studio album, Jolene (1974). Her version of the songreaching number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart twice: first in June 1974 and again in October 1982. It set a record for spending 20 weeks at the top of the Hot Country Songs chart and was Parton’s longest-lasting number one single. It was the first country song to receive Platinum certification for sales of two million copies. “I Will Always Love You” was also successful within other countries, reaching number one in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Parton’s original version of the song was rankednumber 330 on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”. The song has been covered by numerous artists including Whitney Houston, who recorded a cover version for the soundtrack to The Bodyguard (1992).
